It was a rainy day in the city, the clouds blocked out the sky an occasional rumble of thunder was heard throughout the skyscraper covered city. Among the grey buildings the only spot of color was a small flower shop at the end of the street. It was around noon time when another loud crack sounded, rattling the shop from the floor up. You had only started to work on another large order of flowers before you saw the manager run to the door.
"What is it?" you asked, a group of workers had already gathered around a shivering figure.
You looked and saw who it was, Armin Arlert a recent graduate from the local high-school, he was working part time at a bookstore. You had taken notice to this since you would see him walk by the shop, steal a glance and continue walking. You had already thought he was shy and a little bit strange. The manager was calling for a cab to drive him home and some of your co-workers had gathered around with some towels. You sighed catching someone in the rain shivering like an idiot, was normal. You had been like that when you were chasing your ex-boyfriend's car. It had started to rain and your parents had found you lying on the sidewalk crying.
"Mind taking care of Armin until the cab comes? It seems the cab will be coming in twenty minutes." the manager said, she sighed and picked up the phone and started yelling it again.
"Sure, I don't mind... I'll just go get something warm to drink. I guess two coffees wouldn't hurt." you said, you had found a good excuse to leave for a couple minutes.
"Honestly, can you tell if she likes me?" asked Armin to one of your co-workers, he still had several towels on.
"I don't know... maybe some floral arrangement magazines will help you." the co-worker said, before she returned to working on a orange lily bouquet for a customer.
"I wonder what I should do..." Armin sighed, he picked up the magazine and began to finger through the pages.
When you came back from the coffee shop after waiting at least ten minutes for two coffees, you found Armin leaving the shop for the cab. You tried not to show that you wanted him to stay a little longer this time. You went back to your table at the shop. You found Jean a regular arguing over a bouquet of flowers he had received from a friend with a co-worker at another table, only an earshot away .
"Orange lilies are saved for your worst enemy..." you said, as you passed the two who had ceased yelling at each other.
You sat at your bench, just as you were about to pick up the pruners to work on one last bouquet you noticed a small bunch of flowers with a small tag for you. Peonies, mixed in was Rosemary and several small sunflowers. The card had no name on it, you knew who it was from. Once your shift was over you decided to put the flowers in a decent vase at home.
During your Sophomore year you had enough of your high school. There were several reasons why you hated it so much:
1. All of your friends ignored you, they thought you weren't cool enough.
2. You and your boyfriend had broken up.
3. Your close friend Armin was getting tansferred to a early college.
4. You just found another close friend of yours was moving.
5. You had just realized you were in love with the person in reason number 3.
Armin, you had realized at last minute before you could say goodbye. He was the only person who at least cared at the very end of the year. You had wanted to say that you loved him, but you remembered the time when you had tried dating him. It was a mutual break up, the two of you had decided to keep your distance from him for a bit. It hit you when you saw him as a bookstore clerk a dull Junior year Summer. But you kept to that you would stay apart for a bit.
The next day you had decided to at least try to tell him. It was best if you were crushed than have a real crush this time. You took out the phone you had and began to call him. The phone began to tremble in your hand, as you talked on the phone you realized your cheeks were crimson after talking to him.
"So when do you want to meet up, [Name]?" Armin questioned, he only waited for your response.
"How about the cafe, later today at three?" you responded to him, hoping he may get to the idea.
"Okay... I guess..."
While you had left him speechless on the phone, you went to change out of your pajamas and find something more decent for the day ahead. You had learned some what of the meaning of the flowers in the bouquet were.
Sunflowers for adoration, Rosemary for Remembrance and Peonies to say "I love you." when the person couldn't say it out loud. With that full understanding you headed out the door to find out what would happen in the end. Perhaps a happy ending for the two of you...
When you headed to the white table in the cafe you saw him. You sat at the table and smiled at him, he smiled back at you blushing. Before you could even order a cup of coffee the two of you were beet red.
"I love you..." those words were said simultaneously, with that said and done you sighed.
Just as the two of you were about to kiss, the entire cafe began to clap. It could have to congratulate you. Or the real reason was to see a co-worker from the flower shop filming you with a camera.
You looked away and sighed, well the entirety of a quiet confession was taken away. You were furious at that co-worker, Armin looked more humiliated than you. You only felt a little bad that he was blushing so much. The past was really the past and there was nothing to change it. You found yourself happy with whatever challenge that came your way. Just as long as you were with the person who had mutual feelings for you.
